DELUXE SMITHS BLACK DIAL CHROME GENTS ENGLISH WRISTWATCH C 1958 MODEL A260
This is a superb example of a Smiths Deluxe chrome plated and steel backed vintage gents wristwatch, model A260.
An excellent example of the gloss black dial gents wristwatch which is normally with poor dial finish. This whole timepiece is a better than average example with a good movement and dial and hands, and a very lightly worn case. The case diameter is about 32mm, not counting the steel crown, and the case is 3 piece with a steel back and chromium plated bezel and centre section. High quality 27 c.s movement with the j/c number 375850. New ZRC matt calf leather strap fitted, with the bonus of the crown logo which matches the one on the Smiths dial.
This vintage timepiece has been fully overhauled and is currently keeping excellent time. The movement is full Deluxe grade specification with frosted gilt finished movement, polished escapement, and with the distinctive Smiths straight one piece click and click spring, and concealed winding, anti-magnetic flat beryllium alloy hairspring and balance with screws.
Produced from about 1955 the gold plated version always retained the a 358 model number, the A260 chrome plated version seems to have strated life a bit later, in spite of the deceptive model number.
Apparently produced quite simply as a variant by changing the case and crown, and Rhodium plating the dial markers and hands.
Not waterproof, should only be worn as a dress watch. This is fitted with the earlier ordinary balance setting as prior to 1958/9 not many Smiths were shock-proof, the high grade ones with 18 jewel movements being one of the exceptions.
The earlier 3 piece cased example is superior in case construction and finish to the later shockproof one from c1958/9 onwards.
