DELUXE SMITHS ANTARCTIC MODEL A 404 C1960 SHOCKPROOF SAME AS THE ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION MODEL MADE IN ENGLAND
An extremely desirable example of the watch that in 1953 Smiths said was used on the Everest expedition in their adverts, here in its later guise with a "shockproof" movement as seen on the dial marking as in the later antarctic version, in very wearable condition. Fitted here with a new 16mm zrc cowhide leather strap. Case is 33mm excluding the original winding crown. Dial and hands are all original as on all my Smiths watches. Usual Smiths Deluxe grade refined movement. Chrome is excellent much much better than average apart from the actual winding crown, and the dial is excellent for one of the 404 models, having a very light even toning. The pictures won't show this. Later type of case by unknown maker, possibly still Dennison. Escapement is polished, c series movement, concealed winding wheels, straight one piece click and click spring combined, anti-magnetic hairspring which is flat, and the balance has screws. Featuring the original winding crown. Apart from the special numbering of the movements that was used this example is the same as the expedition ones.
Fully overhauled with good timekeeping. Watches of this period are not guaranteed waterproof.
Strap size 16mm. The zrc range of straps start to get a good size from 17mm and up, as the company tends to regard 16mm or less as a ladies watch size, fortunately the small average Smiths watch head size does not look out of place on the 16mm selection.
The usual 2 year warranty applies and the watch comes in a special presentation pack as do all of the Smiths English Watches.
