ASTRAL SMITHS DIVERS WATCH 1970 MADE IN ENGLAND STAINLESS STEEL WRISTWATCH NO6
Smiths equivalent of the Swiss diving watch. The best full production smiths made for true civilian market. There are some slight variations of these making them a microcosm of collector models within the smiths range.
Very similar to products many of which seem to share the same case parts by Swiss and French companies, from jlc down, the British interpretation is an absolute classic. This example is fitted with a hacking astral grade movement, with black disc date. The frosted gilt finished movement has straight line one piece click and click spring, plain balance and flat hairspring. Overhauled to a high standard with excellent time keeping. These divers watches were contemporaneous with the military issued smiths watches and are a robust watch. Case is two piece steel with an alloy bezel. Note the markings on the bezel count upwards. Approx case width 37.5mm including the bezel. Takes a 19mm strap, currently fitted with a tropic pattern rubber strap that is as near to the original one as possible. Rare example with full signature on the dial. Production year probably 1970. The whole watch is in near mint condition, with the exception of slight bubbling of the chromed steel hands, and slight dial marks. Certainly the best example I’ve seen. The black dial is notoriously hard to photograph well and shows shadows which don't exist in real life. I think of this as the British submariner.
