BENSON SMITHS LONDON EARLY 50'S 16J WATCH "TROPICAL DIAL" WITH BOX
Strangely watches from this period by J W Benson are sometimes signed Tropical as well, almost as a premonition of today's terminology. This example hasn't reflected the very even toning almost to the edges of the dial surface where it curves. The Roman numerals and hands are presumably in Radium. I think this one dates to about 1951, the Aquatite case is signed inside not outside. The movement has the now renowned cruciform dust-cap which doubles as a case back and movement spacing ring and was intended to act as a shock absorber. The chrome is worn as usual, with pitting at the lower edge where the back screws on. not affecting the screwed threads however.. The movement is 16 jewel and fully serviced. case width without the original Dennison pattern winding crown is about 33.5mm. The dial is absolutely stunning. two year warranty applies. Complete with the JWB box.
