DELUXE SMITHS A404 WATCH NEAREST PATTERN WATCH AVAILABLE TO THE ACTUAL EXPEDITION MODEL
Deluxe Smiths A404 watch nearest Everest pattern watch available to the actual expedition model. This is the one to buy as well as its sister the A454 antarctic model. This was the version of the a404 that was supplied by Smiths for expeditionary use in Greenland in 1960. With a chromed brass top and screw in steel case back a neat chunky timepiece, reminiscent of the Morris Minor era. The actual dial pattern that went up Everest is assumed to be that of Hillary's watch, but Smiths advertised this as amongst others as being the model that went up to the summit. This example dates from the later production period possibly late fifties, although there is some contention as to when Smiths actually started using the KIF shock settings.
So this watch benefits from a shockproof movement and is in very original condition, even with the original winding crown. Only the crystal and strap are new. The strap size is 16mm and the case diameter is about 33mm. Some scratches but generally in good shape. Feel free to swap the strap for another if you prefer, the one currently fitted is a vegetable tanned cowhide handmade ZRC which I favour for this model.
