DELUXE SMITHS A 404 EXPEDITION MODEL WRISTWATCH C 1958 WITH "TROPICAL" DIAL
A STUNNING DELUXE A404 gents English wristwatch from the post Everest and pre 60 period. One of the last of the 15 jewel non shock-proof versions, as the Smiths range of English watches rather tardily received the kif shock proofing treatment to the non his end watches in about 58/59. Prior to that only specials had the feature which proved absolutely essential as shown by so many Smiths with broken balance staffs.
The case back is marked with the familiar Anti-magnetic and Waterproof engravings, and the top is the later hard chrome plated shinier finish which gives many more years wear than that previously used. Even so we see the usual high spots wearing at 3 and 6, as on these cases.
The dial is a pretty evenly tanned finish and the hands and dial markings are all original. So is the winding crown. Some scratches where the case has been opened in the past, but these could be improved with the careful use of the lathe. Currently the strap fitted is a ZRC hand made cowhide in 16mm. In light tan complimenting the dial nicely.
The A404 appeared in many Smiths adverts as Everest watches and were used in post 1953 expeditions in shock and non-shockproof versions.
Case width 33mm, total thickness 10.7mm. Crown diameter 5.8mm. Total width 35.6mm. Total length 42.1mm.
