J W BENSON LONDON SMITHS EVEREST STLYE DENNISON AQUATITE CASED WRISTWATCH C 1953 7
This is an interesting watch in that Smiths seem to have allocated the dial design to J W Benson, the design that was actually used on the Everest expedition by Hillary, as opposed to the issued A409. Basically the seconds track is a unique pattern to the Everest watches, and you cant seem to find it on a Smiths Deluxe signed product. Dial is not too bad, Dimpled at the feet mount, and the case top his hard plated better than most. this is the thicker type of Dennison Aquatite with the signature inside. 33.3 mm case with screw in back, serial number 154911. Most Benson watches have signed cases, but when found in this type of case, only the Dennison marks as used as on the Smiths of the period. The movement is a Smiths Deluxe upgraded with an additional centre jewel and has the dust cap with the cruciform cut-out. 16 jewel frosted gilt English movement with polished escapement and flat anti-magnetic hairspring. Higher quality Benson balance assembly balance than in a regular Smiths. circa 1953. ZRC cowhide strap. Fully overhauled, excellent timekeeping. Actually a stunning example of a Hillary dial design Smiths.
