S.Smith & Son ltd 1915 half hunter 18ct gold Longines caliber 13.56 wristwatch boxed with canvas strap , signed S.Smith & Son ltd on the enamel dial. The high quality Longines lever movement marked 15j, with the familiar Longines markings on the balance cock. The caliber is marked as 13.56, and this is a centre seconds version.
Referring to the S.Smith's hard cover catalogues from the period, this reference 61 was stated to be a nurses centre seconds watch in silver, so here as in other cases like this the number was re-used later on other models, here presumably as the demand was there the reference was carried over to a wristwatch version. The watch movement is working, the hand setting is done by nail and is a bit sensitive. The case is hallmarked for 1915 London and English made, no Swiss marks. case sponsor is F.T which is possibly Frederick Traherne. The case is numbered 2295711. Gold hallmark for the London assay office is for 1915. the buckle is silver with a Chester hallmark for 1916, maker g.p or c.p.
The watch also comes with a much thinner leather strap also with a silver buckle with a london hallmark from 1915, maker p&ss. the trap lug size on the case is 11mm.Interestingly this movement employs the same type of third wheel with extended pivot for the superimposed central pinion drive wheel as do the later post ww2 Smiths Astral and Deluxe watches.
The period box is with the portland st address which was used from about 1913. some denting and a very tight front cover.
The case diameter is a generous 35mm for the period.
