J W BENSON TROPICAL SMITHS WITH THE CORRECT PATTERN DIAL FOR THE '53 HIMALAYAN EXPEDITION

Regular price £950.00 Sale

This is an interesting watch in that Smiths seem to have allocated the dial design to J W Benson, that was actually used by E.Hillary on the Everest expedition, the seconds track is a unique pattern to the Everest watches, and you cant seem to find it on a Smiths signed product. The dial is tropical as they now say or evenly toned, and the case top has suffered as usual. This is the type of Dennison Aquatite with the signature inside. 33.5mm case with screw in back, serial number 1145847. Movement number 274939.

Most Benson watches have signed cases, but when found in this type of case, only the Dennison marks as used as on the Smiths of the period. The movement is a Smiths Deluxe upgraded with an additional centre jewel and superior balance assembly, and has the dust cap with the cruciform cut-out. 16 jewel frosted gilt English movement with polished escapement and flat anti-magnetic hairspring. circa 1953. Fitted with used ZRC strap, will actually take a 19mm.

Crystal and seal changed for protection.

Serviced to a high standard.

Original crown looks great up against the pitted chrome of the upper case, a real mountaineers watch.

Engraved to the rear of the case.
