Deluxe Smiths large sized 9ct gold 18 jewel high grade wristwatch c1956.
One of the largest gold watches marketed by Smiths. In reasonable all round condition with the dial discoloured by what I suspect was moisture over long periods of time. All the details remain clear however. This is one of the earlier examples of shock proofing by Smiths and is fitted with the two end stone plates on the escape wheel as well as a Breguet over-coil hairspring. I believe the hands a re gold on this example as the hour markers are riveted gold ones.
Case diameter without the winding crown is about 34.8mm. 3 piece Edinburgh assay office hallmarked case with the capita A year letter, so 55 or 56.
Case has the later SCW sponsors mark rather than the BWC mark. These cases have a reinforcing case ring inside and are quite solid feeling but clearly only dust-proof not waterproof. If worn on a daily basis the crystal should be replaced if damaged.
The watch is fitted with a 16mm strap, pretty much a standard size for Smiths, and this is a crocodile leather one.
Fully serviced with a two year warranty.
