EVEREST SMITHS BRITISH ROPES ENGLISH A404/E EXPEDITION TYPE WATCH IN WATERPROOF CASE SERVICED C 1963
Everest Smiths English model 404 expedition type wristwatch in waterproof case, fully serviced and warrantied. This is the later Everest dial signed version of the a404 which was made to celebrate the ascent of Everest in 1953.
Remarkably this watch was presented by the company that supplied the ropes for the Himalayan expedition.
From the 10 years anniversary this one has the distinctive blue steel colour lumed hands and typical everest dial detailing. Fitted with a special Astral grade movement caliber 050461e and marked for batch inspection or series number 123, probably for the 12 month of 1963. I have another in minty condition from the same batch.
The movement and hands are excellent, with some wear to the original chromed crown and a little wear to the case edge at the back, and some expected pitting in general, especially the sides of the case top. There are a couple of small marks from opening the case back. Fitted with a new padded calf strap, new crystal, original clear case seal and serviced to a high standard. The case diameter without the winding crown is about 33mm.
Smooth Astral one piece balance, put in beat with anti-magnetic hairspring. 2 piece case with hard chrome plated top and screw in back, these are normally marked waterproof anti-magnetic, instead this example has an engraved dedication for long service to a Mr Smith, from British Ropes.
The dial is fairly evenly toned tropic style giving the watch an interesting vintage appeal. the strap fitted is a suitable mid brown colour which is a parallel fit so it is 16mm at the head and buckle. Also still present is what appears to be an original fit strap with a chrome buckle that was removed at the time of servicing.
